Building maintenance is part and parcel of home ownership and in this short blog, we offer a few valuable home maintenance hacks that we all should know.
- Roof sealant – Your roof is the most important component of all and you can apply a silicone protective layer that protects the roof tiles. The layer is waterproof so you won’t have to worry about leaking water and once sprayed on, allows the roof to expand and contract by stretching; talk to a local roofing company about silicone sealing.
- Flush the drains – Talk to the company that deals with blocked drains in Sunshine Coast and they would be happy to power flush the system, while also carrying out a CCTV inspection of your drains. This reduces the risk of a blockage anytime in the future. Do this on an annual basis and your drains will be free-flowing.
- High pressure water cleaner – You can buy these online and a couple of hundred dollars gets you a very powerful gun that restores all hard surfaces to new condition; ideal for driveways, paths, patios and even roofs. If you prefer, you can hire a unit from a local hardware store and a weekend is all it takes to transform the exterior of your property.
- Use composite materials – When replacing timber such as fascia and soffit, use composites as they do not require maintenance. Technology is being developed constantly and new materials that have high insulation properties and are very light, strong and durable.
- Prompt repairs – If there is one consistency with home repairs, it is that prompt repairs save money. When you notice a damp patch on the upstairs ceiling, contact a plumber ASAP, then turn the water off at the mains until they arrive and investigate. It makes sense to find a local handyman, perhaps a retired tradesman who doesn’t charge a fortune.
We hope that the above advice helps you manage the upkeep of your home, which is probably the largest single investment you have made to date. Regular inspections and fast repairs will keep maintenance down to a minimum and your home will always look elegant.
